Puja is chant/ ritual performed to host, honour and worship one or more deities, or to spiritually celebrate an event. It may honour or celebrate the presence of special guest(s), particularly the Buddha . The word puja comes from Sanskrit, and means reverence, honour, homage, adoration, and worship. Puja rituals are held by Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs and Hindus.
A shrine interestingly enough in Latin is scrinium “case or chest for books or papers” or Old French: escrin “box or case”, a holy or sacred place, which is dedicated to a specific deity, ancestor, hero, at which they are venerated or worshipped. Shrines often contain Buddhist statues, other ritual objects associated with the figure being venerated e.g. The Vajra.
